WATERBURY, CONN. - The College of Saint Rose traveled to take on Post, falling to the Eagles, 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 18-25, 19-25) this evening.
Saint Rose utilized a long service streak by sophomore outside hitter
Elizabeth Johnson to take seven of the first nine points of the match, but Post would respond with an 8-2 run to keep the opening set close.
Neither team could pull away until the Golden Knights nudged ahead to a 24-22 advantage late. As Saint Rose was on the verge of closing out the first, the Eagles rallied off the final four points in succession to steal the set, 26-24. Junior outside hitter Lydimar Soto had four kills in the first set for Post, including two kills in the final four points to win the frame.Â
Behind five kills from freshman middle blocker
Julia Cavalcanti, the Golden Knights quickly won the second set, 25-16. Saint Rose lead by as many as 13 while holding the Eagles to a .083 hitting percentage as a team in the set. Johnson added three kills and two aces to bring the set score even at 1-1.
Both teams struggled with accuracy through-out set number three, combining for 16 errors and only 14 kills in a 25-17 set victory for the Eagles.
Post controlled the fourth set from start to finish. The Eagles took 12 of the first 16 points en route to a 25-19 win in the clinching set. Sophomore libero Kim Buttery led all players with four aces in the match, including two key aces to help put away the fourth set.
Cavalcanti paced Saint Rose (2-2) with 11 kills on the night. Sophomore outside hitter Kaitlyn Sharkey (10 kills) and freshman outside hitter Madelynn Bloop (11 kills) led the Post (2-3) attack at the net in the victory. Freshman setter Colleen Romero topped all players with 33 assists.Â
Moving forward, Saint Rose travels to Newcastle, Delaware for the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Wilmington. The Golden Knights first take the court on Friday against Jefferson at 7:00 pm, followed by Saturday doubleheader featuring matches with Chestnut Hill at 11:30 am. and host Wilmington at 7:00 pm. Post will be home in Waterbury to host the Post Eagles Invitational. The Eagles are scheduled to face Southern Connecticut State at 2:30 pm and Bridgeport at 7:00 pm. on Friday. Post finishes the weekend against Bentley at 11:00 am and New Haven at 7:00 pm on Saturday.
