GOLDEN KNIGHTS DROP NE10 OPENER AGAINST VISITING ASSUMPTION

ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose fell to Assumption tonight 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 11-25) in its Northeast-10 Conference opener inside the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Freshman setter Emma Strefling registered a double-double for the Golden Knights, totaling 13 assists and 13 digs on the night. Freshman outside hitter Juliana Venduro recorded seven kills and sophomore setter Valeria Jorge tallied six kills to lead Saint Rose offensively. The Golden Knights (3-7/0-1 NE10) struggled to consistently land attacks throughout the match, finishing with a .130 team striking percentage.

The Greyhounds (3-3/1-0 NE10) took the early lead after winning the opening set, 25-19. With the teams tied at 6-6, Assumption benefited from long service stretches from sophomore defensive specialist Brandi Montoya and freshman Alexis Distasio to win seven of the next nine points. Distasio and freshman outside hitter Carly Goodhue each had four kills in the opening 25 points for the Greyhounds.

Several early rallies saw Assumption take a 13-7 lead in the middle stages of the second set, before hot service streaks from Venduro, Strefling, and freshman middle blocker Julia Cavalcanti propelled the Golden Knights on a 11-3 run to jump ahead 18-16. Saint Rose recorded four total team blocks on the way to winning set number two, 25-23.

Tied at 8-8 in the third set, Assumption won 10 of the next 15 points to go up 18-13 before proceeding to win the frame, 25-22. Five of Goodhue's seven kills in the third set landed during the game-changing rally. The momentum carried into set four for Assumption as the Greyhounds won 14 of the first 18 points. Montoya's four aces helped the visitors clinch the match with a 25-11 fourth set victory.

Goodhue finished with 17 kills in the win for Assumption. Distasio added a double-double of 18 kills and 10 digs and junior setter Kyra Belden facilitated the Greyhound offense with 54 assists.
