SAINT ROSE DEFEATS NYACK 3-1 ON LACE UP 4 PEDIATRIC CANCER DAY


ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose fought to a 3-1 victory over Nyack today at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights earned the win with set scores of 25-15, 25-15,18-25, 25-23.

Freshman middle blocker Karleigh Fripp recorded 13 kills and senior middle blocker Cassidy Smith landed 10 strikes on the afternoon, with both totals setting a career high for both players. Freshman middle blocker Julia Cavalcanti contributed a strong effort as well with nine kills, five blocks, and four aces.

Freshman setter Emma Strefling and sophomore setter Allison Sellers combined for 37 assists on the 44 Golden Knight kills. Junior libero Gabriela Boyrie was active on the defensive side, registering a team-high 13 digs. 

"This was a big win for us heading into Northeast-10 Conference play," said Assistant Coach Sam Kubik after the victory. "A lot of different players stepped up for us today and we earned this win as a team."

Fripp was dominant in the early stages of the match for Saint Rose (3-6), recording 10 of her 13 kills in the first two sets, which the Golden Knights quickly won to take a 2-0 set lead. Nyack (0-6) combined for a mere .017 hitting percentage as a team in the first two frames.

Nyack battled to win set number three, 25-18. The Lady Warriors jumped out to 4-0 advantage and never gave up the lead on the way to the set victory. Nyack was aided by two key aces from senior middle blocker Cassady Hymes in the third. Saint Rose bounced back to secure the match victory, taking the fourth set 25-23.  

Nyack was led by freshman outside hitter Rayah Burge, who matched Hymes for the team-high of nine kills.

The Golden Knights and Lady Warriors both sported yellow shoes laces throughout the match in support of the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer campaign.

Saint Rose opens up NE10 competition on Tuesday when Assumption visits the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnaisum for a 7:00 pm tilt. Nyack heads home to host Bloomfield on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
