DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose dropped a close match on the road at Mercy, with the Mavericks scoring the lone goal in the 90th minute to upend the Golden Knights 1-0 this afternoon.
The game-winner for Mercy (3-1), was struck perfectly from 25 yards out by senior forward Abraham Lopez who collected a ball from senior midfielder Archie Jones just outside the left side of the area, before firing his shot inside the low right corner.
Sophomore forward
Hilmar Halldorsson manufactured a team-high three shots for the Golden Knights (1-2), while junior keeper
Ryan Henning recorded both of his saves in the second period to keep the match scoreless until the waning seconds.
Playing the second stanza with 10 men following a 42nd minute red card to junior defender Benjamin Van Buren, Mercy still managed a 9-4 shot advantage in the final half. The winning goal from Lopez was the first of the season for the senior.
The best scoring chance for the Golden Knights came in the 15th minute when a Halldorsson shot was turned away by freshman goalkeeper Eirik Elvestad.
Looking ahead, both sides have home matches Saturday. The Golden Knights host Bloomfield in a make-up from September 2. Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Mavericks have a 3:00 pm meeting versus East Coast Conference rival College of Staten Island.
