ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose used a pair of fifth inning rallies to close its regular season by sweeping visiting Southern Connecticut State this afternoon at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights (6-18/6-18 NE10), which pounded out 18 hits in the "Senior Day" doubleheader, won the opener 5-2 and took the nightcap 6-3.
Â
Sophomore infielder
Madison Chandler went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBI to lead the Black and Gold offense in the twin-bill.
Â
"It was great to put everything together as we enter the postseason," said Head Coach
Abby Arceneaux. "We knew what we were capable of and for it to finally show allowed for our seniors to conclude their home careers with a sweep and series win. I was really proud of how all five of them stepped up to play a big part of the weekend."
Â
After the visiting Owls put a run across in the first inning of the opener, Chandler cleared the left field fence for a two-run homer. Saint Rose then broke a 2-2 deadlock with a three-run fifth. Chandler, who went 6-for-12 with five RBI as the Golden Knights picked up three wins in the four-game series, keyed the two-out rally by hustling out an infield single. The effort scored senior shortstop
Ryane Brush, who had tripled. Senior infielder
Savanna Liverio-Tyler and senior catcher
Shannon Moore followed with RBI hits.
Senior right-hander
Kylee Warner made the outburst stand up, allowing just one Owl to reach base from there and preserve the complete game victory. She whiffed a career-high seven in what would be her final home appearance in the circle.
Â
The bottom of the fifth inning proved vital yet again in the nightcap. Trailing 3-1, Saint Rose used the combination of SCSU miscues and timely hitting to put across five runs in the frame. Chandler, Moore, junior rightfielder
Morgan Tyrrell, and sophomore infielder
McKenna Ryan all had RBI singles in the late rally.
Â
Freshman right-hander
Margaret Kelley continued her strong work in the circle during the nightcap. The rookie allowed just three hits across 5.0 innings of relief work to earn the victory.
Â
Sophomore infielder Morgan Tuscano went 3-for-6 with an RBI to lead SCSU (14-13/11-13 NE10) in the twin-bill.
Â
This afternoon's doubleheader concluded the regular season for both squads. The NE10 will announce the bracket for its Conference Championship Tournament, slated to begin on Tuesday, May 4, tomorrow evening.
