ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose had its late comeback attempt fall short in today's15-10 Northeast-10 Conference loss to #7 Adelphi this afternoon at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Â
Down 14-8 with 8:05 remaining, sophomore midfielder
Gabriel Nish and freshman attack
Paul Wright scored to trim the deficit to four, 14-10, with 3:39 to go. However, Adelphi, ranked seventh in the latest USILA/Dynamic Coaches' Poll, came up with the ensuing face-off win and was able to run out much of the clock before eventually adding its 15th marker.
Saint Rose (1-3/1-3 NE10) had five players register at least two points in the NE10 matinee. Senior attack
Jordyn Marchiano recorded three goals and an assist to lead the Golden Knights. Nish added two goals and a helper, while sophomore goalie
Ryan Fleming established a program-record with 24 saves.
"I am very proud of the way our team battled today from the opening whistle against a very talented opponent," said Head Coach
Jim Morrissey. "We went toe-to-toe with them for a little over half the game, but their talent cranked it up on us in the third quarter and they started to separate from us. If we could have eliminated some failed clears and offensive turnovers, we could have been right there at the end. That being said, the overall focus and determination exhibited by our guys today was impressive."
Â
Senior midfielder James Hall and junior attack Joseph Duchnowski topped Adelphi with five points apiece. Senior Edward Peristein won 19-of-27 face-offs, while Kevin Rice, a graduate student, stopped six Saint Rose shots to pick up the victory in goal.
The Golden Knights, which played the Panthers tightly throughout the contest, had a flair for the late goal early. Sophomore attack
Eddie Baker deposited a sophomore attack
Greg Walsh feed past Rice with less than a second left in the opening period, while Marchiano did the same on a pass from senior midfielder
Jack Pemrick with 10 ticks remaining before halftime. Following the 5-5 first half deadlock, Saint Rose continued its momentum at the start of the third quarter, going up 7-6 just 5:04 in. However, Adelphi scored the next six goals, and eight of the next nine, to take control.
Looking ahead, both teams are scheduled to play next on Wednesday afternoon. Saint Rose is slated to travel to Syracuse to face #1 Le Moyne at 4:00 pm. Per Northeast-10 Conference and New York State Department of Health guidelines,
NO SPECTATORS at this point will be permitted to attend any games scheduled for the Plumeri Sports Complex or on the road in order to keep student-athletes and staff members safe. Fans can watch the contest on the
NE10NOW Network. Meanwhile, Adelphi (3-1/3-0 NE10) is set to visit #11 Pace for a 3:30 pm meeting.
