GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose scored three times in the fifth and seventh innings of today's opener to gain a split at host Northeast-10 Conference rival Adelphi.
Â
The Golden Knights (4-11/4-11 NE10) won the first game 7-3, but the Panthers (9-11/7-6 NE10) overcame a 4-1 deficit to take the finale 9-7. Saint Rose sliced into a four-run deficit by pushing across a pair in the eighth, but could not get any closer.
Â
Sophomore catcher
Derek Haughey propelled Saint Rose offensively in the first game. He belted a two-out, two-run homer in the fifth inning that snapped a 2-2 tie and added a two-run single to highlight a three run seventh.
Â
Haughey finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while junior centerfielder
Zephaniah Vaughn doubled and came around to score two batters later on a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter
Francisco Infante. Senior right-hander
Austin Cole, a transfer from Adelphi, allowed two runs and whiffed five over 4.1 innings of the seven inning game to pick up his first win of the year.
Â
Junior left fielder Kyle Olson finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to pace the Panthers (9-11/7-6 NE10).
Â
Infante, junior first baseman
Jack McDonald, senior left fielder
Stephan MacMeans, and senior shortstop
Andrew Pedone each pounded a pair of hits for the Golden Knights in the nightcap. Pedone also drew a pair of walks.
Â
Sophomore third baseman Matt Alifano smacked a pair of home runs for Adelphi.
Â
Both squads have NE10 four-game weekend series ahead of them. Saint Rose heads to New Haven to face Southern Connecticut State, while the Panthers travel to Springfield to take on American International.
Notes: McDonald extended his hit two streak to five games today…Pedone now has a team-leading eight multi-hit efforts on the year.
