BALANCED ATTACK PROPELS GOLDEN KNIGHTS TO FIRST-EVER NE10 WIN

Saint Rose Defeats American International 12-7

ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose used a balanced attack to defeat visiting American International 12-7 this afternoon at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights had five players record multiple points to earn the program's first Northeast-10 Conference win. Sophomore midfielder Deanna Ciliento and sophomore attacker Margaret Brent registered three goals and an assist apiece to the lead the way.

Saint Rose controlled the draw on the cold and rainy day, securing an important 16-5 advantage on the visiting Yellow Jackets. Sophomore defender Nicole Taveras came up with seven, while sophomore midfielder Payton O'Hara had five.

Freshman goalie Dorothy Gaffney made eight of her 13 saves in the first half to help Saint Rose Head Coach Sarah Martin earn her first career victory.

"I'm incredibly proud of this afternoon's team win," said Martin. "We played with confidence and determination throughout the full 60 minutes. Getting our first win within the NE10 makes today even more special. This conference is so competitive and hard to break into. I'm glad that we were able to come together and get the job done."

The Golden Knights got off to a great start, holding a 4-1 lead with 16:33 left before the break. AIC (1-9/1-8 NE10) battled back to trim its deficit to two, 6-4, late in the opening period. However, Ciliento and Brent both netted tallies before the half, part of a 4-1 Saint Rose run sandwiching the intermission.

With 15:45 remaining, American International senior midfielder Kristen Iwanicki completed her hat trick to make things interesting at 10-5.  Ciliento scored just 47 seconds later to give Saint Rose back the momentum. Brent followed up by putting one into the back of the net shortly thereafter and the combination of Saint Rose winning the draw and some Gaffney stops allowed the Golden Knights to keep AIC at bay.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose (1-7/1-7 NE10) is scheduled to continue a stretch of four-straight home games on Monday at 6:00 pm vs. Southern Connecticut State. Fans can watch the contest on the NE10NOW Network.  Meanwhile, AIC is slated to receive a visit from #16 New Haven on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
