ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose returned to the pitch for the first time this afternoon following a 500-day Covid-19 induced hiatus with a match at a seasoned Division I University at Albany.
The host Great Danes, who had five games under their belt coming into the match, scored twice in the opening 13 minutes to upend the Golden Knights 4-0.
Â
Saint Rose (0-1-0) more than held its own though by generating a 6-5 shot-on-goal advantage and a 4-2 corner kick differential.
"It was great being out there today after being away for almost 500 days. I was really proud of the effort and the teamwork the guys put into today's match. Albany is a very good Division 1 team with a lot of quality so we knew this was always going to be a tough match, said head coach
John Ciano. "We made some sloppy mistakes early that really put us into a hole, but I feel the score was not indicative of the overall performance. There were a lot of positives to take away and we look forward to getting back on the field to train."
Â
Junior forward Austin DaSilva, junior midfielder Haflidi Sigurdarson, sophomore Guillermo Miancos, and freshman Adam Aourmaich accounded for the four UAlbany (1-4-1) strikes.
Â
The Golden Knights forced junior keeper Michael Kennedy to come up with six saves. Senior midfielder
Andrew Lule and sophomore midfielder
Josh Elliott produced three and two shots respectively for Saint Rose.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are scheduled to visit Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences next Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Great Danes are slated to host America East rival Binghamton next Friday.
Notes: Today marked the team's first game in 489 days…Saint Rose last played on November 16, 2019 when its historic season was capped with a 2-1 setback at Assumption in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship game…Eight returning starters from the 2019 squad are joined by 10 newcomers.
