NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The College of Saint Rose made an early second period push to cut into a 20-point halftime deficit, but could not get any closer than nine points in tonight's 85-69 setback at Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State.
Â
The Golden Knights (4-4/2-3) were hurt by the long ball in the opening 20 minutes as they went 0-for-9 from the arc during that span.
Â
Regardless, they came out of the locker room with a flurry. Sophomore guard
Manasseh Small buried a pair of free throws to make it an 11 point, 49-38, ballgame with 14:53 remaining. Freshman guard
Tray Alexander then came up with one of his three steals and finished at the other end to get Saint Rose to within the aforementioned nine points, 57-48, with 11:55 left.
Â
The Owls (3-4/1-3 NE10) countered by running off 14 of the game's ensuing 19 points to push their advantage back to 18, 71-53, after junior guard Ulyen Coleman converted inside. It remained a double-digit affair the rest of the way.
Â
Fifth-year guard
Adam Anderson tossed in a season-high 24 points and freshman forward
Shane O'Dell scored 19 to lead Saint Rose. O'Dell also hauled in eight rebounds, while Alexander handed out six assists.
Â
Sophomore guard Lyron Bennett produced a unique "double-double" behind 16 points and 12 assists to pace five Southern Connecticut State players in twin-figures scoring. Coleman wound up with a team-high 17 points.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back home Friday to host Saint Michael's at 6:00 pm while the Owls entertain Lincoln University on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
Notes: Anderson has been in double-figures scoring in four straight games…O'Dell stands fifth in the NE10 in scoring average behind a team-high 18.6 points per game…Alexander is fifth in the conference with a 5.8 assists average.
