SAINT ROSE OPENS SEASON WITH EXHIBITION AGAINST DIVISION I UMASS OF THE ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE


AMHERST, Mass.- The College of Saint Rose opened its 2021-22 schedule tonight with an exhibition at the University of Massachusetts. The host Minutewomen, who are members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, outscored the Golden Knights 95-54.

Sophomore guard Isabel Sanchez topped Saint Rose with 16 points in 20 minutes of action. Sanchez connected on 5-of-7 attempts from the field and went 4-for-4 from the arc. Junior guard/forward Makaela Johnson tallied nine points on 4-for-5 shooting. As a team, the Golden Knights found success from behind the arc, shooting 44.4 percent (8-for-18) on the deep ball.

Graduate forward Sam Breen finished with game-high 19 points, connecting on 8-of-10 shots, to lead UMass.

Saint Rose was within 10, 39-29, at the break. However, UMass shot 9-for-16 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the foul line throughout the third period to pull away.

The Golden Knights officially open their season on Friday and Saturday, November 12 and 13, at the University of the Sciences Conference Challenge in Philadelphia. The home opener is set for Tuesday, November 23 versus Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne.
Notes: The young Saint Rose roster features eight freshman, four sophomores, three juniors, and one fifth-year…All five starters are among 11 returning letter winners from a year ago, which played an abbreviated seven-game schedule throughout the spring semester…Among those back are junior guard Becca Townes and fifth-year forward Nina Fedullo…Townes led the Golden Knights 12.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game a year ago, while Fedullo averaged 11.9 points, on 50.9 percent shooting from the floor. She also pulled down 5.1 boards on a regular basis.
