WORCESTER, Mass. – The College of Saint Rose battled to a 0-0 draw at Northeast-10 conference rival Assumption this afternoon. Despite not being able to find the back of the net, the #10 nationally ranked Golden Knights controlled both the possession and shot advantage throughout the match to remain unbeaten this fall.
Fifth-year goalkeeper
Marika Laurendeau made a season-high eight saves for the Golden Knights (8-0-2/5-0-2 NE10), leading the Saint Rose defense to a second consecutive clean sheet. Freshman midfielder
Lauren Amerena topped all Golden Knights with seven shots. Junior forward
Kaelyn Britt attempted five shots and freshman midfielder
Sabrina Mazza recorded three shots to help Saint Rose outshoot the Greyhounds, 25-12.
Assumption (4-1-5/2-0-5 NE10) opened the match with an aggressive offense approach that resulted in three corner kicks in the first four minutes. However, the Saint Rose defense remained stout throughout the opening flurry, allowing only a single Greyhound shot on goal that Laurendeau was able to safely corral.Â
The final 40 minutes of the opening frame would squarely belong to Saint Rose as the Golden Knights generated a 10-2 shot advantage at the half, including six attempts that were accurately on frame. Amerena led Saint Rose with four shots, while Britt and junior midfielder
Janina Mueller recorded two shots each in the first scoreless first half.
Saint Rose continued to apply the pressure throughout the second stanza, as the Golden Knights owned an 11-4 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes of regulation. A strike on goal from freshman forward
Mia Klammer in the 78th minute was turned away by Assumption freshman goalkeeper Julia Walsh, one of four saves required by Walsh in the second half.
The Golden Knights had three good looks at the goal in the first session of overtime, but Walsh continued to stand strong in net for the Greyhounds. The 94th minute sequence included headed shots by Amerena and junior midfielder
Theresa Durle that were saved by Walsh, followed by a strike just over the crossbar by senior midfielder
Ciera Lundy.Â
Both teams had scoring chances in the final minutes of the second overtime, but neither goalkeeper would waiver in the scoreless duel.
Walsh finished with 13 saves in net for Assumption, a season-high for the first-year goalkeeper. Sophomore forward Kate Carleson led the Greyhounds with two shots on goal.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home to host American International on Tuesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Assumption will also be home on Tuesday night for a non-conference match against Mercy at 7:00 pm.
