ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose put up a solid defensive effort and displayed its usual balanced attack to upend visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival American International 2-0 tonight.
Â
The Golden Knights (9-0-2/6-0-2 NE10), ranked #12 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches National Poll and one of only 11 unbeaten NCAA Division II teams remaining, limited the Yellow Jackets (4-5-1/2-5-0 NE10) to one shot on goal on the way to its seventh shutout of the year.
Â
"This was a great win. Our defense had another solid performance. Both of our goals were created with quality flank play and a lot of players made positive contributions on the field tonight," said Head Coach
Laurie Darling Gutheil.
Â
Freshman forward
Mia Klammer continued her outstanding debut campaign by scoring both goals to lift her league leading total to nine on the year. Junior forward
Kaelyn Britt set up her first strike, while sophomore midfielder
Tatiana Leggiero helped design the insurance marker.
Â
The Golden Knights outshot American International 8-0 throughout the first half that yielded the eventual game-winner. Britt delivered a cross from the right flank that Klammer drove home from 12-yards out on the left side of the area with 26:35 elapsed. Klammer then established herself near the Yellow Jackets goal line to be in position for the insurance marker after Leggiero delivered a superlative cross from the right side that junior midfielder
Janina Mueller initiated off a restart at the 82:58 mark.
Â
At the other end, fifth-year keeper
Marika Laurendeau efficiently controlled her space to chalk up her 60th career win between the posts.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are off until Wednesday, October 20 when they travel to Syracuse for a 3:00 pm league date at Le Moyne. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets head to Waltham, Mass. Friday for a 6:30 pm conference meeting at Bentley.
