STRONG PLAY FROM SMITH AND KAREEM LEAD GOLDEN KNIGHTS IN SETBACK TO SCSU

ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose took a 3-0 loss to visiting Southern Connecticut State tonight. The Northeast-10 conference rival Owls won the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-20.

Senior middle blocker Cassidy Smith and freshman outside hitter Jennah Kareem led the Golden Knights with nine kills each, with Smith landing her strikes at an extremely efficient .538 average. Freshman setter Emma Strefling recorded 13 assists on the Golden Knight attacks and junior libero Gabriella Boyrie tallied a match-high 14 digs.

Saint Rose (5-12/1-4 NE10) sprinted out to an 11-4 lead to begin the opening set, taking advantage of six attack errors by the Owls in the sequence. SCSU would regroup to score 14 of the next 19 points to go ahead 18-16. The teams traded scores to 20-20 before Southern Connecticut won four of the final five points to take set number one. Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the opening frame, with the Owls (.098 strike average) and Golden Knights (.111 average) combining for 15 attack errors.

The offensive woes would subside in the second set, as the two teams battled with minimal errors to a 19-19 tie. With the set up for grabs, the Owls used a 6-1 rally, including a long service run from graduate middle hitter Abigail Epstein, to close the frame and propel their match lead to 2-0. The second set saw 16 ties and 10 lead changes.

The Owls (14-5/3-1 NE10) won the third frame, 25-20, to wrap the straight-set victory. Kareem tallied five kills in the final set in the effort to extend the match, but the SCSU attack continued to overcome the Golden Knights right up to match point.

Graduate outside hitter Gabriela Vazquez landed nine kills on a .571 average to help lead SCSU to the victory. Freshman setter Lily Miller and senior setter Heliceliz Rivera collectively passed out 30 assists for the Owls.

Moving forward, Saint Rose embarks on a stretch of five consecutive road contests, beginning Tuesday night in Orangeburg, N.Y. against Dominican. The first set of the non-conference tilt is scheduled for 7:00 pm.  Southern Connecticut State will be at home Sunday to host a tri-match featuring American International and Wilmington. The Owls will first face AIC at 11:00 am and conclude the day against the Wildcats at 3:00 pm.
