DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR STREFLING IN SETBACK AT AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The College of Saint Rose took a three set defeat at Northeast-10 Conference rival American International tonight. The strong offensive performance from AIC allowed the Yellow Jackets to take the match 25-17, 25-17, 25-20.

The Golden Knights (5-11/1-3 NE10) were led by the 11 dig, 11 assist "double-double" tallied by freshman setter Emma Strefling. Offensively, freshman middle blocker Julia Cavalcanti paced Saint Rose with six kills. Senior middle blocker Cassidy Smith and sophomore setter Valeria Jorge each added five kills in the setback.

Both teams were knotted at 13-13 in the opening set before AIC won 12 of the final 16 points to take the frame. A similarly tight second set had the Golden Knights and Yellow Jackets tied at 11-11 when AIC closed with a 14-6 rally to go up 2-0 in match.

The Golden Knights fought hard to earn a potential fourth set, taking to the service line to land four aces in set number three. However, another mid-set streak from AIC saw the Yellow Jackets transform the 15-15 deadlock to a 23-17 advantage. Strefling responded with a long service turn that brought Saint Rose back to within 23-21, but AIC managed to close the final two points needed to wrap up the match.

Freshman outside hitter Paola Soto-Burgos topped AIC (10-6/3-2 NE10) with a match-high 15 kills. Freshman outside hitter Ulrika Blombren registered a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, and sophomore setter Naomi Eckert distributed 44 assists. Eckert ranked second in the NE10 with 9.86 assists per set entering tonight. The AIC attack remained aggressive throughout the match, as the Yellow Jackets landed 52 kills on a .342 swing percentage in the three sets.

Moving forward, Saint Rose returns to the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium on Friday to continue NE10 play against Southern Connecticut State. First set is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm. The Yellow Jackets travel to Pace on Saturday for a 1:00 pm conference matchup against the Setters.
