ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose scored a season high four goals with four different players providing the strikes in today's 4-0 victory against Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption. The contest was marred by torrential rain, which forced the anticipated pregame Senior Day festivities to be withheld.
Regardless, the Golden Knights did not miss a beat.
Sophomore forward
Hilmar Halldorsson, sophomore back
Nick Koenig, sophomore midfielder
Josh Elliott, and senior midfielder
Oskar Aaströem each struck for Saint Rose (5-4-2/4-2-1 NE10). Koenig also had an assist as did sophomore forward
Nico Faretta and freshman midfielder
Daniel Zholendz.
Meanwhile, freshman keeper
Tomas Rozman recorded a pair of saves to post his second clean sheet in five starts this autumn.
"I thought today was a very complete game on both sides of the ball. Assumption is a dangerous team with some very good attacking players and I was really happy with how we defended them. We scored some nice goals as well from the attacking side of the game, but now we must be ready to prepare for a strong Stonehill side on Tuesday," said head coach
John Ciano.
Overall, the Golden Knights manufactured a 20-12 shot advantage, including an 8-3 differential in threats-on-target on the way to their third straight victory.
Assumption (1-9-1/1-7-0 NE10) appeared content to play at a deliberate pace, but Saint Rose kept countering and struck with the eventual game-winner with only 12:01 expired. Faretta delivered a pass from the left side of the area that Halldorsson deflected into the net.
Ten minutes later, Koenig converted a penalty kick following a hard foul in the area for a 2-0 Golden Knights lead at intermission.
Following a shortened hafltime break, Koenig sent a ball to Elliott who created space and rifled a shot from 15-yards out that rattled off the far-right post at the 60:16 mark for a 3-0 lead. Only eight minutes after that, Zholendz sent a square pass to Aastroem at the top of the area that the latter calmly one-timed just under the crossbar.
The Greyhounds had their best opportunity with 62:12 expired when junior forward Anthony Carlucci hooked a strike from 20-yards out on the left flank that Rozman dove to his left to prevent it from finding the top far-right corner.
Going forward, both sides have home league matches Tuesday. The Golden Knights host Stonehill at 6:00 pm for Best Buddie Night, while the Greyhounds face Southern Connecticut State at 7:00 pm in Worcester, Mass.
Notes: Elliott extended his goal scoring streak to four matches this afternoon…Rozman was named the NE10 Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week on Monday…He now leads the NE10 with a .889 save percentage and stands second behind a 0.55 goals-against-average.
