SPARKILL, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose had three players score twice in the program's first-ever intercollegiate game with this afternoon's 13-8 non-conference loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas. Freshman defender/midfielder
Gabrielle Panko led the Golden Knights with two goals and an assist, while freshman midfielders
Deanna Cilento and
Samantha Ebel added two goals apiece.
Â
After Cilento netted the first goal in program history off a pass from Panko just 1:13 in, the host Spartans (2-0) answered with three goals in a 3:11 span. Saint Rose (0-1) continued to stay in the contest, erasing a trio of two-goal deficits in the first half to trail 6-5 at the break.
Â
Saint Thomas Aquinas opened the second half on a 4-1 run across eight minutes to gain some breathing room. The Golden Knights kept battling, cutting the deficit to 10-8 with 20:27 to go. However, the Spartans broke the run with a tally just 1:26 later and didn't permit another Golden Knight marker.
Â
Freshman goalie
Madeline Yeung stopped 14 STAC shots, while sophomore midfielder
Ashley Burns contributed two assists.
Â
Junior midfielder Kaitlyn Gutenberger topped the Spartans with six goals and two assists, while senior goalie Laura Delorenzo made 15 saves to earn the win.
Â
Looking ahead, both teams have home games up next. Saint Rose has its home opener on Saturday at 12:00 pm versus The University of the District of Columbia. STAC hosts Post University on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
