SAINT ROSE WINS FINALE TO GRAB SPLIT AT SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The College of Saint Rose bounced back from a 6-4 game-one setback with a 7-3 victory in the nightcap to gain a split at Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival Southern Connecticut State this afternoon.

"We came out for the second game with a lot more energy, got some key hits with guys in scoring position, and salvaged the day. We're looking forward to the rubber match tomorrow," said head coach Wayne Jones.

Junior shortstop Andrew Pedone reached base three times and scored a pair of runs, while junior second baseman Patrick LaDouce finished 2-for-4 to lead the Saint Rose charge. Senior left-hander Greg Musk allowed two earned runs and fanned 10 throughout 6.0 innings of work, before handing the ball to junior right-hander John Braun who tossed 3.0 innings of shutout ball to pick up the save.

The Golden Knights (7-9/3-2 NE10) scored once in the first, four times in the second, and added two more in the seventh to afford themselves some breathing room in what had turned into a 5-3 ballgame.

Pedone belted a two-run triple to the left-center field gap, and LaDouce and sophomore left fielder Stephan MacMeans followed with RBI base hits in the second. Saint Rose took advantage of an Owls (10-14/1-4 NE10) error to push one across in the first.

Pedone then scored on a fielder's choice and another Southern Connecticut State miscue, and junior catcher Jon Montesanti came across on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Garrett Klahr to account for the two seventh inning runs.

For the Owls, senior left fielder Nick Lamberti finished 2-for-3 and scored twice, while junior first baseman Mike DeMartino drove home a pair with a two-run triple to right in the third.

In today's first game, Saint Rose bounced back from a 5-1 deficit by pushing across a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to get to within one, but the Owls halted the damage and added an insurance tally in their half of the eighth for the win.

MacMeans, Pedone, and Montesanti each finished with two hits and an RBI for the Golden Knights.

DeMartino drove in three runs to propel the Owls.

Looking ahead, the two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game weekend series tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
Notes: Musk has fanned 24 batters throughout 22.2 innings of work this spring…Pedone has reached base in 11 consecutive games, while Klahr has hit safely in nine straight.
