GOLDEN KNIGHTS ROAR BACK TO UPEND AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose rallied from a nine point deficit with five minutes left to upend visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival American International 73-72 tonight. In the process, the Golden Knights (9-16/6-12 NE10) snapped a five-game skid.

Freshman guard Tyler Washington scored 22 of his 24 points after halftime to propel Saint Rose. Washington went 10-for-14 from the floor, including 4-for-5 from long distance, and also hauled in five rebounds while handing out four assists.

"I was really happy for our guys tonight. I thought we made some really tough defensive stops down the stretch. It was nice to see Tyler have a breakout performance," said head coach Mike Perno.

The Yellow Jackets (10-16/6-12 NE10) had a chance to go ahead with four seconds remaining, but junior swing Zekiah Owens misfired on both of his attempts from the free throw line after the Golden Knights called a timeout. Senior guard Shane Herrity then missed the front end of a one-and-one with two seconds left after being fouled on Owens' second missed. Regardless, an ensuing American International desperation heave at the buzzer fell off the mark.

The Golden Knights found themselves down 68-59 with 5:01 to go before junior guard Michael Wearne knocked down a 3-pointer and Washington drained a jumper in the paint to make it 70-64 with 3:25 left. Washington and senior forward Matt Cerutti then sandwiched a pair of treys around two free throws by American International freshman swing Bane Terzic that made it 72-70 Yellow Jackets with 1:52 showing on the clock.

After American International came up empty on its next possession, Washington buried yet another 3-pointer with 1:18 left to give the Golden Knights their first lead since the 12:22 mark of the second stanza. The stage was thus set for the dramatic finish.

Wearne and freshman forward Sekou Sylla each added nine points for Saint Rose, while freshman guard Isaiah Salter led four Yellow Jackets in twin figures with 15 points and six assists.

Looking ahead, both teams are back on the hardwood with conference games Saturday. Saint Rose heads to Syracuse to take on Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne at 3:00 pm, while American International hosts New Haven at 3:30 pm.
