GOLDEN KNIGHTS DEFEAT CALDWELL 66-56 IN SEASON OPENER

Four Saint Rose Players Score in Double Figures

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The College of Saint Rose opened its season by defeating Caldwell 66-56 at the Delta Hotel NE10/CACC Conference Challenge, hosted by Saint Michael's.

The Golden Knights (1-0), which shot 27-of-61 (44.3%) from the field, put four players in double figures in the non-conference victory. Junior forward Nina Fedullo led the way with a career-high 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Sophomore forward Shamim Wambere added 15 in her Saint Rose debut, while senior forward Leah Dollard and senior guard Cameron Graupman tossed in 11 apiece. Sophomore guard Becca Townes contributed across the box score, registering nine points, six rebounds and four assists.

"We played really hard for 40 minutes," said Saint Rose Head Coach Karen Haag. "Our defense is further along that we expected at this point of the season. We were able to take advantage of mismatches in the paint and capitalize upon them."

Guard Alessia Smaldone, a graduate student, topped Caldwell (0-1), slotted to finish second in the CACC's north division in a vote of its league's coaches, with 14 points in defeat.

The Saint Rose defense got going early, scoring nine points off of seven Cougar turnovers in the opening quarter. The effort led to a 20-11 lead after the opening period. Caldwell trimmed the deficit during the second stanza, heading into the locker room down five, 31-26. The Golden Knights commenced the third quarter on a 6-2 run to regain control. Fedullo had four points during the stretch. Saint Rose permitted the Cougars to get no closer than six across the final 11:30. For the game, the Golden Knights forced 22 Caldwell turnovers and scored 44 points in the paint.

The final day of Tournament action pits Saint Rose against Wilmington at 1:00 pm. Caldwell then takes on the host Purple Knights at 3:00 pm. Fans can watch all the action live on the NE10 Now Network.
Notes: The Golden Knights were picked to finish seventh in the Southwest Division in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason coaches poll.
