ALBANY, N.Y. – The top-seed College of Saint Rose asserted itself from the get-go on the way to tonight's 4-0 NCAA Championship Tournament first-round victory against visiting eighth-seed Daemen (11-4-3). The Golden Knights (18-2-1) scored three times in the first half and added another midway through the second to run their win streak to seven matches.
Â
Saint Rose will now meet Northeast-10 Conference rival Stonehill in a second round match Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights upended Stonehill 2-1, in overtime in their regular-season meeting in Albany. Meanwhile, the Skyhawks (12-4-4) advanced with tonight's 2-1 opening round victory versus Jefferson (15-6-0).
Â
Saint Rose showed its usual depth by putting five players in the scoring column. At the other end, junior keeper
Marika Laurendeau made three saves while the backline of seniors
Karmyn Carter,
Nia Brown and
Deanna Trongone, and freshman
Sanna Rein, held the Wildcats senior striker Jamie Boyer, who entered the game third in the country with 18 goals, to just one shot that sailed off target.
Â
Trongone also provided the game-winner while Rein tallied the lone second half strike. Senior forward
Caitlyn Dabagian and freshman forward
Olivia Boucher accounted for the other two goals. Senior midfielder
Morgan Burchhardt had a pair of assists.
Â
Trongone made it 1-0 with 14:33 gone by when she delivered a free kick from some 40-yards out on the left flank that bounced in the area and under the crossbar. Dabagian touched home a Burchhardt corner from the left flag nine minutes later, before Boucher drove home her own rebound at the 30:44 mark. Rein then gained position on the right side of the area to head home another Burchhardt corner that practically duplicated Sunday's game-winner in the NE10 Championship Final versus Southern Connecticut State.
Â
Overall, the Golden Knights engineered a 10-5 shot advantage, including an 8-3 differential in threats at-target, and developed eight corners, while surrendering just a pair.
