MOVING ON!! SAINT ROSE UPENDS STONEHILL 1-0 TO ADVANCE TO EAST REGION FINAL

 |
ALBANY, N.Y. – The top-seed College of Saint Rose punched its ticket to another date in the NCAA Championship Tournament with today's 1-0 second-round victory against visiting fourth-seed Stonehill that was played on a 35-degree rain-soaked pitch.

The Golden Knights (19-2-1) will now host third-seed Molloy in the East Region Final (Round of 16) on Friday, December 6. The Lions (15-4-3) advanced on penalty kicks at second-seed Mercy after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw throughout 110 minutes of soccer today in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. The Golden Knights upended visiting Molloy 2-1 earlier this season.

"I'm just so happy for these young ladies who have worked so hard. They have overcome a lot and each one has contributed in her own unique way. We're so happy to be able to continue to play in Albany in front of our fans and our entire community," said head coach Laurie Darling Gutheil.

Senior forward Nina Predanic, the Northeast-10 Conference and D2CCA East Region Player of the Year, provided the difference with 10:04 expired when she touched home a feed off the right flank from senior midfielder Morgan Burchhardt. Stonehill keeper Kaitlin Brown appeared to get a piece of Burchhardt's delivery, but not enough to push it past Predanic who in the process became just the fourth player in Saint Rose annals to chalk up 19 goals in a season.

Overall, the Golden Knights controlled possession for 52 percent of the match and engineered a 17-6 shot advantage, including a 7-2 margin in threats on target. They also generated a 7-3 corner kick differential. Meanwhile, junior keeper Marika Laurendeau and her accompanying defensive unit of seniors Karmyn Carter, Nia Brown, and Deanna Trongone, and freshman Sanna Rein, stood stout as Saint Rose posted its second straight shutout.

Nevertheless, both sides had chances to add to the scoring in the first half. Predanic touched a nice ball from the top of the area to freshman forward Olivia Boucher whose one-timer from 12-yards away sailed just over the crossbar with 22 minutes gone by.

At the other end, the Skyhawks (12-5-4) countered on a Saint Rose miscue and entered the attacking third. Sophomore forward Camryn Thompson pushed a pass to junior forward Alex Giardina who subsequently sent a diagonal ball through the area that skipped just beyond the sliding reach of junior forward Kayla Henry at the opposite post.
