ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose shot 54.7 percent from the floor (35-for-64) and held off a late charge by Caldwell to chalk up a 90-88 victory tonight at the Eighth Annual Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament on the Dominican College campus.
Â
"It was a real gritty win for this group. I am proud of the way we responded down the stretch. We got a bunch of contributions from a lot of different guys, said head coach
Mike Perno. "I thought our leadership and chemistry took a step forward today."
Â
Junior guard
Adam Anderson scored 27 points, two shy of his career-high, and handed out a career-best five assists without committing a turnover to propel the Golden Knights (2-1). Senior guard
Michael Wearne tossed in 13, while freshman guard
Manasseh Small and freshman forward
Josh McGettigan finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
Â
The Golden Knights (2-1) led for all but five minutes and appeared to be in the driver's seat behind a 12 point, 84-72, advantage with 6:47 remaining. The Cougars (1-2) then promptly scored 15 of the game's next 19 points to get within one, 88-87, with 2:06 to play.
Â
However, sophomore guard
Tyler Washington knocked down a key jumper and the Golden Knights forced Caldwell to come up empty on its final three looks to grab the victory.
Â
Saint Rose concludes its stay at the tournament tomorrow as the Golden Knights will take on the host Chargers at 7:00 pm.Â
Notes: Sophomore forward
Sekou Sylla was named to the NE10 weekly honor roll Monday…Saint Rose has shot better than 50.0 percent in each of its three games this season.
