ALBANY, N.Y. – A trio of The College of Saint Rose women's basketball players registered double figures in tonight's 63-59 win vs. LIU Post at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Ashley Vanderwall led all players with 19 points on 50.0 percent shooting. Sophomore forward
Nina Fedullo added 13 points on 50.0 percent shooting, while junior guard
Courtney Clasen tossed in 10.
"Tonight was a great team win against a quality opponent," said Saint Rose Head Coach
Karen Haag. "I'm proud of the toughness we showed in the final minutes."
LIU Post (11-2), receiving votes in the D2SIDA national poll, also had a trio of players in twin figures. Forward Sasha Patterson, a graduate student, led the visitors with a "double-double" of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Shannon Doyle tallied 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while junior guard Asia Turner finished with 11 points.
The Golden Knights (9-4), now winners of five-straight games, opened up a 12-4 lead early. LIU Post would follow with a 24-11 run to gain control. Saint Rose closed the half on a 9-2 run to trail by one, 30-29, at the intermission.
Saint Rose turned the non-conference contest in its favor with a 12-4 run across 5:01. The stretch, spanning the late third and early fourth quarters, turned a deficit into a six-point, 52-46, lead. The Golden Knight advantage would range between four-to-six points until Vanderwall knocked down a three-pointer to give Saint Rose a 59-52 lead with 2:16 remaining.
The Pioneers, which had a seven-game winning streak snapped, did not quit. A Patterson bucket with 22 seconds left made it a one-point game. After Vanderwall made both foul shots, the visitors called timeout to strategize. On the ensuing possession, Doyle would take a bid at tying the game from the right corner. The miss was corralled by Clasen. She would make one-of-two at the line for the final margin.
