ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose handed tenth ranked Bentley only its second loss of the year with today's 66-61 triumph at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, the Golden Knights (6-9/3-5 NE10) avenged last month's 80-63 setback to the host Falcons in Waltham, Mass.
Â
Saint Rose held Bentley to 23.2 points below its season scoring average by limiting the nation's second most efficient 3-point shooting squad to a 23.1 percent (6-for-26) effort from the arc. The Falcons entered the afternoon burying 43.9 percent (133-for-303) of their long range attempts.
Â
"Our defensive effort today was as good as it has been all season. We really helped each other and competed on the glass.
Matt Cerutti was terrific and helped us seal this win by scoring the game's last five points," said head coach
Mike Perno.
Â
Cerutti, a senior forward, finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high six assists to lead Saint Rose, which had all eight players who saw action figure in the scoring column. Senior guard
Shane Herrity added 12 points, while freshman forward
Sekou Sylla wound up with 10 points and seven boards. Sophomore forward
Jeff Allen knocked down all three of his attempts from the arc to finish with nine points in 17 minutes off the bench.
Â
Senior guard Ryan Richmond scored 17 of his team-high 19 points after halftime for Bentley (14-2/7-2 NE10).
Â
Saint Rose, which today drained 54.2 percent (13-for-24) of its long distance chances, went in the locker room up 15, 41-26, at intermission and built its largest lead of the afternoon of 17 points after Cerutti knocked down a jumper on the Golden Knights first possession of the second half.
Â
However, Bentley responded with a 20-5 run that made it a two point, 48-46, affair with 12:12 showing on the clock. It remained a one or two possession game until Richmond drained a jumper to afford the contest its first deadlock, 61-61, with 55 seconds left.
Cerutti then came up big when it mattered most by knocking down a 3-pointer from the right wing with 29 ticks to go. The Falcons then came up empty on the other end, before Cerutti sealed it by converting a pair from the free throw line with seven seconds left.
Â
Looking ahead, both squads have 7:30 pm league dates Wednesday. The Golden Knights head to Easton, Mass. to take on Stonehill. Fans unable to attend the game may view it on the
