FLUSHING, N.Y.-The College of Saint Rose rebounded from a 4-3 deficit in the final 11 minutes and freshman midfielder Filippo Bellú scored three goals including the game-winner with 40 seconds left to lift the Golden Knights to today's 5-4 triumph at Queens College. Saint Rose is now 3-0 on the year for the first time in program history (1981).
Â
"That was one of the most exciting college soccer games I've ever been a part of. Queens College is a great team that plays in one of the toughest environments in the country. To come away with a victory in that fashion is just amazing," said head coach
John Ciano. "I'm so proud of the determination, grit and character the boys displayed tonight! This was truly a team effort and I am so happy for them!"
Â
Queens (1-2-1) manufactured a 22-13 shot differential, but only a modest 9-8 advantage in threats on target. Regardless, eight different Golden Knights registered at least a point including junior keeper
Gianni Carillo, who in addition to recording five saves, earned an assist on Bellú's second strike that put Saint Rose up 3-2 midway through the first period.
Â
The Golden Knights got out to a quick start as senior forward
Paulo Sdoia converted a penalty kick with 2:09 elapsed and Bellú finished a feed from senior midfielder
Carlos Menjivar a mere four minutes later. However, the host Knights tied it for the first time with pair of goals less than two minutes apart, before Saint Rose went back up. Queens then converted a PK of its own to level the match 3-3 at intermission.
Â
The host Knights took the lead again when junior forward Romario Hulea drove home a rebound after junior midfielder Kevin Quituizaca's initial shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
Â
Saint Rose kept its composure though and senior midfielder
Kyle Clemens drove home a pass from junior midfielder
Wari Isaac at the 78:19 mark to set the stage for Bellú. Junior midfielder
Niv Fogel set up the latter on a breakaway off a counterattack, and Bellú capitalized on the chance to seal the dramatic victory.
Â
For Queens, junior forward Emgi Gousse accounted for its first two goals while senior keeper Robert Retnauer recorded three saves.
Â
Looking ahead, Saint Rose opens the Northeast-10 Conference portion of its 2018 slate Tuesday with a 7:00 pm meeting at American International in Springfield, Mass. Queens is back on the pitch Sunday for a 3:30 pm date at Saint Anselm in Manchester, N.H.
