ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose converted a first half penalty kick that proved to be a justifiable difference in tonight's non-conference game versus Dominican at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Â
The Golden Knights (2-0) dictated the pace throughout the majority of the evening to earn the 1-0 victory. Saint Rose engineered a 15-3 shot advantage and generated seven corner kicks while surrendering only one.
Â
"Winning at this level is never an easy task. I was really proud of the way we defended tonight. Dominican was a determined group that threw a lot at us. We were resilient and showed great character to earn the victory," said Saint Rose head coach
John Ciano.
Â
Senior forward
Paulo Sdoia buried the PK in the lower left corner with 32:42 gone by after freshman midfielder
Ismael Aourid was dragged from behind while dribbling into the area. Saint Rose nearly went up 1-0 in the ninth minute when freshman midfielder Filippo Bellú got in the air for a header that forced Dominican (0-2) junior keeper Tyler Doll to leave his feet in order to make the save.
Â
Doll registered five saves throughout the match, including four in the second half to keep the Chargers within striking distance. At the other end, junior
Gianni Carillo only needed to make one save as the Saint Rose defense held the Chargers without a shot throughout the opening 66 minutes.
Â
Looking ahead, Saint Rose has a 4:00 pm road date Friday at Queens while Dominican has a 2:30 pm Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Saturday at Jefferson University in Philadelphia.Â
Note: Saint Rose is 2-0 for the first time since 2013 when the Golden Knights finished 8-10.
