ALBANY, N.Y. –The College of Saint Rose men's lacrosse team lost 19-9 to visiting No. 17 Saint Anselm in the first round of the
Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament this afternoon. The Golden Knights (9-8), making their first postseason appearance, were outscored 8-2 in the third quarter.
Sophomore attack
Jordyn Marchiano netted three goals for Saint Rose, while junior attack
Carter Badour added two goals and two assists. Senior
Evan Doherty fired two home and senior
Matt Graham, the program's leading scorer, concluded his career with a goal and an assist.
The Hawks' precision passing made it a tougher afternoon for Saint Rose senior goalie
Liam Guiton, the program's all-time saves leader and reigning NE10 Goalie of the Week. Saint Anselm (10-4) took advantage of the multiple easy looks, shooting 45.2 percent and converting a pair of man-up opportunities. Guiton finished with 14 saves.
Saint Anselm received a game-high seven points, six goals and one assist, from junior attack Patrick Sweeney. Freshman forward Matt Ward tossed in five points on three goals and two helpers. In goal, junior Nick Richard made 16 stops.
The Hawks, which never trailed, methodically built an advantage, using a 5-1 first half run to hold an 7-4 lead going into the break. Sweeney then scored twice 12 seconds apart to give the visitors a 10-4 lead with 11:40 left in the third quarter. From there, Saint Rose was unable to get closer than five.
Junior midfielder
Nicolas Johnson won 10-of-14 face-offs, part of an 19-for-32 day in the X for the Golden Knights.
Saint Anselm will play in Friday's Semifinal at No. 1 Le Moyne. Game time is set for noon.
