WORCESTER, Mass. – The College of Saint Rose rallied from a 4-0 deficit in the first game and a 3-0 shortfall in the second contest only to suffer a pair of one-run setbacks at
Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption this afternoon. The Golden Knights (9-14/2-6 NE10) lost the opener 7-6 and were upended 3-2 in the finale.
Â
In the first game, junior catcher
Nick Schaub belted a one-out single down the left field line and sophomore second baseman
Andrew Pedone doubled to right to put the winner run in scoring position. However, Assumption sophomore right-hander Manny PegueroMelo retired the final two batters to preserve the win.
Â
Saint Rose previously scored two runs in the fifth to cut its deficit in half and then added four more an inning later to take a 6-4 lead. Senior center fielder
Brian Uliana did most of the damage with a two-run single, while senior left fielder
Matt McKinnon smacked an RBI double before the Greyhounds pushed across a pair of runs in the seventh.
Â
Pedone finished 3-for-3, McKinnon wound up 2-for-3, and Schaub went 2-for-4 to lead the offense. Senior right-hander
Alex Tomlinson came out of the bullpen to toss 2.0 innings of no-hit ball. Senior first baseman Jake Byrne drove in three runs for the Greyhounds (13-15-1/7-4-1 NE10).
Â
The nightcap had a similar feel to it as Saint Rose scored twice in the eighth after Assumption had opened up a 3-0, first inning lead. However, the Golden Knights went in order in the ninth to allow the Greyhounds to remain unbeaten in seven of their last eight contests.
Â
Junior first baseman
Nicolas Teitter bounced an RBI single through the left side and Saint Rose scored its second run on a wild pitch to make things interesting in the eighth.
Â
Senior third baseman
Joe Foran and junior designated hitter
Kenny Fils-Aime finished with two hits each to propel the Golden Knights offense. Byrne again had three RBI for Assumption.
Â
Looking ahead, both squads have 3:30 pm home NE10 divisional dates Wednesday. Saint Rose takes on American International, while the Greyhounds host Merrimack.
