LATE LE MOYNE RALLY DOES IN GOLDEN KNIGHTS

Saint Rose Falls 3-2 in Upstate Challenge Opener

ALBANY N.Y. – Visiting Le Moyne scored three runs in the top of the seventh to defeat The College of Saint Rose 3-2 in a Northeast-10 Conference game this afternoon.

Senior designated player Dana Nicoletti and junior infielder Briana Bowen each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Golden Knights (10-12/5-3 NE10).

Hits were difficult to come by against freshman right-hander Thalia Santiago and Le Moyne senior right-hander Alexis Eastman in the early going.  Through four, the teams combined for just two hits in the Upstate Challenge series opener.

Saint Rose broke through in the fifth with two runs off Eastman. With out out, Nicoletti singled home junior pinch-runner Samantha LaBarbera to open the scoring. Senior outfielder Katie Shevlin would cross the plate on the ensuing Bowen double. The Golden Knights threatened for more, loading the bases with one out before Eastman worked out of the jam without allowing additional runs.

The Golden Knights again had a chance to tack on some insurance runs in the sixth, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Eastman again wiggled out of trouble unscathed.

The missed opportunities would prove vital when the Dolphins (21-8/7-5 NE10) took the lead with a three-run seventh off Santiago and freshman right-hander Emily Kurtzner. Junior outfielder Madison DeRita had the big hit of the inning, doubling home a teammate with one out. DeRita finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Eastman got the win (14-3), while Santiago took the hard-luck loss (4-7). The freshman struck out six, a Saint Rose career-high, and allowed only three hits across 6.1 innings.

Both teams are in action later this week. The Golden Knights will play four games at Adelphi this weekend, while Le Moyne hosts American International for a doubleheader tomorrow.
