SAINT ROSE SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT MERCY

Golden Knights take opener 8-5 in nine innings

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Mercy on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Knights took the first game 8-5 (9 innings) before dropping the second game 5-0 (6 innings).

Junior infielder Briana Bowen got Saint Rose (5-9) on the board quickly in the opener, homering to right in the first inning. Freshman right-hander Thalia Santiago battled all afternoon to make the tally stand up. Through six, the Mavericks (10-5) left eight runners on base, including three in the third. Mercy was able to break through in the seventh after a pair of hits put runners on second and third with no outs. Senior Skania Lemus then bounced a one out single through the left side to tie the game. Santiago stranded the potential winning run on third and and the teams went to extras.

In the eighth, senior infielder Taylor Solomon singled home a pair to give Saint Rose the lead. The Mavericks plated a pair in the bottom half to continue.

Saint Rose scored five runs in the ninth. Following an RBI single by freshman infielder Savanna Liverio, junior outfielder Astasia Myler blasted a grand slam to left-center. Mercy managed to put across two runs off a tiring Santiago, before freshman right-hander Emily Kurtzner came in to save it.

Bowen went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the victory.

Senior right-hander Dana Nicoletti and Solomon had two hits each in the nightcap. Solomon, a co-captain, finished the day 5-for-8 with two RBI.

Both teams are scheduled to play conference games this weekend. The Golden Knights are set to host a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against New Haven on Friday afternoon, while Mercy plays two at Queens on Saturday.
