GOLDEN KNIGHTS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER AT SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS

Shevlin and Myler combine for eight hits, six runs, two home runs and four RBI

SPARKILL, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Saint Thomas Aquinas on Friday afternoon. The Golden Knights (4-8), which won by scores of 6-4 and 9-3 (9 innings), were led offensively by senior outfielder Katie Shevlin and junior outfielder Astasia Myler. Shevlin went a combined 4-for-8 with a home run, pair of doubles, three runs scored and two RBI out of the lead-off spot. Myler, who also went deep on her 4-for-7 afternoon, scored three runs and drove in a pair.

"We were firing on all cylinders today," said Saint Rose head coach Abby Arceneaux. "Our hitters had great at bats throughout the lineup, getting some clutch hits, and Emily and Thalia pitched tremendous."

Saint Rose got on the board quickly in the opener. Shevlin led off with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by junior infielder Briana Bowen. The visitors tacked on five runs in the fourth. Myler and senior catcher Sydney Cimini had RBI hits in the frame.

The Spartans (2-12) responded with three runs in their half, before adding a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin.

Bowen, Myler and Cimini combined to go 5-for-8 with three runs scored and four RBI in the non-conference victory.

The Golden Knights scored six runs, the single-inning season-high, in the ninth to take the second game. Senior designated player Dana Nicoletti emptied the bases with a three-run double, before coming around to score on a Shevlin homer. The offensive outbreak helped freshman right-hander Thalia Santiago garner her first collegiate win.

The Golden Knights are scheduled to play next Tuesday, March 27 at Mercy. STAC plays two at Holy Family on Sunday.
