DINWIDDIE, VA.–The College of Saint Rose opened its 2018 campaign in extraordinary fashion by upending #2 and defending national champion West Chester 4-1 on Friday at Shepherd Stadium. Junior left-hander
Brandon Budlong fanned 10 and surrendered only an unearned run on four hits over the distance to pick up the victory.
Â
Junior left fielder
Alexander Koshgarian and freshman designated hitter
Samuel Brioso each went 2-for-4, while senior shortstop
Mark Powell homered to lead the Saint Rose (1-0) attack.
Â
"It was an all-around great team effort, from the guys on the bench to the guys who played. Everyone was focused during the game and the result showed," said Saint Rose head coach
Wayne Jones.
Â
The Golden Rams (0-1) scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead in the first, but Budlong shut the door the rest of the way. Powell tied it in the home half of the first and freshman third baseman
Francisco Infante had an RBI groundout in the second that brought across Koshgarian with what proved to be the winning run.
Â
The Golden Knights then added one in the sixth and another in the eighth.
Â
Looking ahead, both teams continue their weekend residency in Dinwiddie County tomorrow. The Golden Knights have an 11:00 am doubleheader versus East Stroudsburg while the Golden Rams have an 11:00 am twin-bill with Indiana (PA).
