GOLDEN KNIGHTS CLOSE 2018 WITH FOURTH-STRAIGHT WIN

13-2 FOURTH QUARTER RUN SEALS HOLIDAY MATINEE VICTORY

ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose used a 13-2 fourth quarter run to close 2018 with a 61-54 home victory vs. The University of the District of Columbia. The outburst turned a one point deficit into a 10-point advantage with less than two minutes remaining in today's non-conference matinee.

Senior forward Karissa Birthwright led all players with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She also grabbed nine rebounds and blocked a pair of shots. Senior guard Ashley Vanderwall netted 13 of her 14 points in the final period as the Golden Knights (8-4) won their fourth-straight game.

"We played a very gritty second half against a tough and physical team," said Saint Rose Head Coach Karen Hagg. "This was a great team win as we head into the break."

District of Columbia (3-7) put a trio into double figures in defeat. Junior guard Tyra Coombs registered a "double-double" of 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead the effort. Senior guard Natasha Roy topped the Firebirds with 13 points, while sophomore guard Maya Thomas added 12.

The Golden Knights utilized a 10-0 spurt to grab a 17-9 lead after the opening period. The Firebirds battled back to within a pair, 26-24, at the break. The game was tight from there until the Saint Rose scoring spree across the majority (7:53) of the fourth quarter. Vanderwall then went 6-of-6 at the foul line during the final 40 seconds to ensure the home triumph.

Both teams have more than 10 day layoffs until their next contests. The Firebirds are off until Sunday, December 30 when they host Virginia State at 2:00 pm. Saint Rose takes the court next two weeks from tonight, Wednesday, January 2, vs. LIU Post. The non-conference home game is slated to begin at 5:30 pm. Fans that are unable to make it to Daniel P.
