ALBANY, N.Y.-The College of Saint Rose put four players in double figures scoring and committed only a pair of turnovers to hand Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven its first loss today with a 77-58 triumph inside the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Â
"We really played tough defense and that was a big key with providing our offense some easier opportunities in transition. We need to continue to defend and rebound, and I think the offense will take care of itself," said head coach
Mike Perno.
Â
Freshman forward
Sekou Sylla recorded his third double-double of the year with a season-high 24 points to go along with 11 rebounds to pace the Golden Knights (3-4/1-4 NE10). Sophomore guard
Adam Anderson tossed in 15 points, while senior forward
Matt Cerutti and senior guard
Shane Herrity each scored 14. Also, sophomore guard
Matt Keenan passed around six assists in his first collegiate start and senior guard
Kamron Johnson handed out five.
Â
Junior guard Elijah Bailey scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the Chargers (5-1/3-1 NE10).
Â
Saint Rose outscored New Haven 19-12 throughout the last 10 minutes of the first half to go in the locker room up 38-31 at the break. The Golden Knights then put themselves in control behind a 12-3 jaunt with 16:10 left in the ballgame that transformed a seven point, 44-37, lead into a 16 point, 56-40, cushion with 11:04 to play. Cerutti went 1-for-2 from the stripe and Keenan knocked down a 3-pointer to ignite the spurt. Sylla capped it with a free throw of his own.
Â
The Golden Knights eventually led by as many as 23 points with 4:49 to play after Herrity drained one of his four, 3-pointers on the afternoon.
Â
