PACE SQUEEZES PAST GOLDEN KNIGHTS, 3-2

Webber Totals 18 Kills on .359 hitting


ALBANY, N.Y. - Senior middle hitter Shayna Webber led all players with 18 kills on .359 hitting but The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team was upended 3-2 by visiting Pace University tonight. The Golden Knights dropped the Northeast-10 Conference match by scores of 25-21, 18-25, 25-16, 22-25, 12-15.
 
Junior outside hitter Stevie Schweitzer added 15 kills and nine digs, while senior setter Sam Kubik registered 40 assists and nine digs. The duo combined to serve up eight aces. Junior Tina Ceriello, who was named the NE10 Libero of the Week on Tuesday, elevated 26 Pace attacks. Saint Rose (11-8/2-3 NE10) totaled 14 blocks, eight of which came from Webber, and held the Setters to .124 hitting.
 
Pace (15-3/4-1 NE10), now winners of four-straight, received "double-doubles" from senior outside hitter Claudia Fontanet and junior setter Samantha Nidini in the comeback victory. Fontanet, one of three Setters to record 13 or more kills, finished 18 rallies and had 11 digs. Nidini accumulated 28 assists and 13 digs. Junior middle hitter Tajana Calimpong-Burke tossed in 15 kills, while freshman outside hitter Sandra Yang added 13. Junior libero Danielle Vaiano led Pace with 14 digs.  
 
Saint Rose took the opening set on the strength of an 8-0 run and .345 hitting. The Setters responded by using a 12-2 stretch to tie things up. The Golden Knights started the middle set on a 9-2 to take back momentum. Kubik recorded three-straight service aces in the frame. The fourth set was deadlocked at 18 before Pace tallied the next four points. Saint Rose rallied to make it a 23-22 score; before back-to-back Setter kills extended the match. Pace held Saint Rose to .000 hitting to complete the comeback. Calimpong-Burke registered four kills on .375 hitting in the decisive period.
 
Both teams have road matches up next. Pace is at Le Moyne tomorrow at 1:00 pm. Saint Rose is off until next weekend when it plays at Saint Michael's on Friday night and at Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon.

Notes: The Golden Knights have recorded NE10-bests of 153 total blocks and 2.21 blocks per set…Webber tops the Conference with 1.12 blocks per set…Sophomore middle hitter Kyla Archie (1.05) ranks third in the category…Junior Tina Ceriello, who was named NE10 Libero of the Week on Tuesday, entered the weekend atop the NE10 in digs per set (5.81) and total digs (395)…She has earned the honor four times this fall, including the past two weeks…Ceriello entered the match 16th nationally in digs per set (5.89)…Kubik, second among the league leaders with 668 total assists, ranks third on the Saint Rose career assist chart…The co-captain has 2,426 career assists, with Lisa Domermuth '95 second at 2,755…Kubik and Schweitzer each have six "double-doubles" this season.
