ALBANY, N.Y.-The College of Saint Rose scored twice 11 minutes apart in the first half to chalk up a key 2-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory against visiting Adelphi tonight. The two sides stepped onto the Sullivan Field pitch only a point apart in the conference standings with the postseason looming.
Â
The contest lived up to its expectations as each squad manufactured 15 shots and six threats on goal, although the Panthers registered a 4-0 advantage throughout the final 19 minutes as they desperately tried to come up with the equalizer.
Â
Senior midfielder
Julianne Johnston and freshman forward
Kaelyn Britt both scored their fourth goals of the year to propel the Golden Knights (10-3-2/8-3-1 NE10). Meanwhile, junior keeper
Marika Laurendeau recorded four saves and routinely interrupted Adelphi's forays into the area.
Â
Sophomore forward Alexis Weiser accounted for the Adelphi strike.
Â
Johnston made it 1-0 in the 14
th minute when she tapped in a Britt feed into the lower right corner from about 12-yards out. Johnston then returned the favor by a redirecting a free kick to Britt that was initiated by freshman back
Viviana Sebastiano at the 24:33 mark.
Â
The Panthers broke through in the opening two minutes of the second period when Weiser drove home a pass from senior back Savannah Taylor that Laurendeau actually got a piece of while diving to her right. Regardless, Laurendeau and the rest of the Saint Rose defense stood tall the rest of the way.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights have a 1:30 pm non-conference date Sunday at Molloy College on Long Island. Meanwhile, Adelphi gets back on the pitch Saturday with a 7:00 pm league meeting at Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H.
