ALBANY, N.Y.-The College of Saint Rose provided a fitting memory to
HOME.COMING and Family Weekend by rallying from a 2-1 deficit in the final six minutes of regulation to upend visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption 3-2, in double-overtime this evening. In the process, the Golden Knights (7-4-1/4-4-1 NE10) improved to 5-1 at home and snapped a four-match skid.
Â
"We needed this win tonight, and the team brought that level of determination and urgency to the match. We told them to keep the belief and continue to play to our identity through this tough stretch. I was so proud of the way we competed and the way we fought back late to earn a victory against a very good Assumption team," said head coach
John Ciano.
Â
Senior forward
Paulo Sdoia provided the game-winner with just less than three minutes remaining when he dribbled diagonally from the left flank to the middle of the area, before lining a shot that found the upper far corner.
Â
Saint Rose initially took a 1-0 lead into intermission after junior midfielder
Niv Fogel flicked a ball that junior forward
Shane Fuller ran onto and buried inside the left post with a mere 9:36 elapsed.
Â
However, the Greyhounds (6-5-1/4-4-1 NE10) responded as junior midfielder Jason Lages scored twice within a 13-minute span to seemingly put them in control. Lages initially lined a free kick from 30-yards out inside the far left post at the 68:25 mark and then created space for himself inside the area, before burying a shot to make it a 2-1 affair.
Â
However, Saint Rose kept its composure and forced extra time when Sdoia lined a cross to junior midfielder
Jaakko Teräsranta who converted his deflection at the goal line while being dragged down from behind. Sdoia then provided the final touch on a damp, chilly evening that featured a pair of squads in the mix for an NE10 postseason berth.
Â
In goal, junior
Gianni Carillo made four of his five saves after halftime, while freshman Sebastian Jimenez mirrored that effort for Assumption.
Â
Up next, both squads have 7:00 pm matches Wednesday. The Golden Knights host #24 and league leader Adelphi, while the Greyhounds have a road date at New Haven.
Notes: Saint Rose is 1-0-1 in overtime this autumn…Ten different players have scored at least one goal…Sdoia and freshman midfielder
Filippo Bellú have a team-leading six strikes apiece…Fuller recorded his first collegiate goal this evening.
