ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose withstood a Southern New Hampshire fourth-quarter charge to gut out a home 69-66
Northeast-10 Conference victory on Wednesday night.
Â
Junior guard
Isa Vara de Rey topped all players in scoring with a career-high 20 points. Vara de Rey, who made 66.7 percent of her shots, added four rebounds and two assists.
Â
The Golden Knights (8-9/6-5 NE10), which led by as many as 12 in the third quarter, saw their advantage dwindle to one, 62-61, with 4:42 remaining. However, the combination of a layup by sophomore guard
Takora McIntyre and a Vara de Rey trey got it back to six with 2:05 to go. A three-point play by Southern New Hampshire (11-6/7-4 NE10) junior guard Briana Camara cut it back down to three with 45 ticks left. The Penmen were able to get off a final shot at the horn, but it was off the mark.
Â
"It was a great team effort tonight," said Saint Rose head coach
Karen Haag. "We really took care of the ball and got some big rebounds down the stretch. I'm glad we got the win against a really talented Southern New Hampshire team."
Â
The Golden Knights received 11 rebounds from junior forward
Zoe McDonald, three of which came in the final 4:42. Junior guard
Ashley Vanderwall added 12 points for the victors, which made 52.9 percent of their three-pointers.Â
Â
Saint Rose closed the first half on a 21-5 run during the final 7:38 to lead 44-36 at intermission. Vara de Rey totaled all 10 of her first-half points in the second period.
Â
Junior forward Kylie Lorenzen gave the Penmen a "double-double" of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Lorenzen, who registered her 1000
th career point earlier this season, made all eight of her foul shots. Senior guard Catherine Stinson tossed in 14 points, while freshman guard Gyanna Russell added 13.
Â
Looking ahead, both teams have home NE10 games on Saturday at 1:30 pm. The Golden Knights will entertain Assumption, while Southern New Hampshire hosts American International.
Note: 135 student-athletes and various teams were honored at halftime of both of tonight's women's and men's games in recognition of outstanding academic or athletic achievement at the conference, regional, and national level.
