ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose turned the tide of close encounters this spring with tonight's 3-2 victory against visiting
Northeast-10 Conference rival American International. The Golden Knights (4-18/3-6 NE10) entered the day 0-6 in one-run games, but used some clutch pitching and hitting to chalk up their third straight win.
Â
"We got great pitching and a few timely hits to grab the victory. We've been in lot of close games this year and are battle-tested. The guys have stuck together and are not afraid of tight games," said head coach
Wayne Jones.
Â
Saint Rose pushed across the winning run in the eighth when senior third baseman
Alex Chandler drew a one-out walk and junior first baseman
Joe Foran slapped a base hit through the right side that put runners at the corners. Foran then moved ahead 90 feet on a wild pitch and senior designated hitter
Joe DeLuca was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Â
Senior shortstop
Tyler Ungerland then looped a one out base hit to short left field over a drawn-in infield that brought across Chandler with the eventual winning run.
Â
Senior right-hander
Carmine Vricciariello retired the Yellow Jackets (8-18/4-8 NE10) in order in the ninth to pick up the save.
Â
Saint Rose struck early with a pair of runs in the first, before American International broke through with one in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Â
In the first, freshman second baseman
Andrew Pedone drew a one-out walk, Chandler singled, and then Foran walked to fill the bases. DeLuca took advantage of the moment by roping a two-run base hit to center that staked senior southpaw
Joe Pokrentowski to an early lead.
Â
Pokrentowski wound up surrendering just two runs, one earned, on seven hits throughout 7.0 innings of work. He also fanned a pair in a no-decision outing and capped his evening in style by registering back-to-back strikeouts after American International had put the potential winning run on third. Junior right-hander
Caleb Gregg worked around a base hit in the eighth to pick up the win.
Chandler went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored while Foran finished 1-for-3 to extend his hit streak to seven games.
Â
For the Yellow Jackets, freshman left fielder Matt Krause went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the fifth. Freshman righty Ryan Bruning scatted two hits and fanned five in 7.0 innings of work on the bump.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights have a three game NE10 series at Adelphi on Friday and Saturday, while the Yellow Jackets host Bloomfield Thursday in non-conference action.
