TWO NINTH INNING RALLIES PROPEL FRANCIS MARION PAST GOLDEN KNIGHTS

FLORENCE, SC–Host Francis Marion pushed across two runs in the ninth inning of the opener and plated three in the final frame of the nightcap to upend The College of Saint Rose, 7-5 and 8-7, yesterday.

Freshman left fielder Kenny Fils-Aime drove in four runs with a pair of extra base hits and freshman right fielder Anthony Scheller went 5-for-8 with three runs scored and a stolen base on the afternoon. Junior center fielder Matt McKinnon and junior second baseman Joe Foran had three hits and a pair of RBI.

On the mound, junior right-hander Kody Shaw tossed 5.0 innings of two hit, two run ball in the nightcap.

The Golden Knights (0-5) tied the first game 5-5 in the ninth when freshman pinch runner Andrew Pedone scored on an error. However, junior right fielder Reese Cooley belted a two run homer in the bottom half to win it for the Patriots (16-2).

In the finale, Saint Rose jumped out to a 7-2 lead by scoring twice in the second, four times in the fourth, and once more in the fifth. Foran tripled home the two runs in the second, Fils-Aime then cleared the bases in the fourth after Pedone, Schiller, and McKinnon had all singled with two outs. Senior shortstop Tyler Ungerland brought Fils-Aime across with a base hit to right field.

Pedone and Schiller then opened the sixth with back-to-back doubles.

However, the Patriots added one in the home half of the sixth and another pair in the eighth. They then tied it in the ninth on a hard hit, two run infield base hit and pushed across the winning run on a bases loaded single.
