SAINT ROSE OPENS NE10 PLAY WITH A SWEEP AT AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

GOLDEN KNIGHTS WIN 9-3 and 8-5

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.–The College of Saint Rose opened Northeast-10 Conference play with a pair of wins at American International this afternoon. The visiting Golden Knights (4-10/2-0 NE10) won by scores of 9-3 and 8-5.

"Today's sweep was a total team effort. Our pitchers threw very well and our defense made some big plays when we needed them to. Offensively, we had a lot of quality at bats, with several players having an exceptional day. All 13 players contributed today to help us pick up two big divisional wins," said Saint Rose softball head coach Abby Arceneaux

Junior right-hander Dana Nicoletti went 7-for-9 with four runs scored and three RBI on the day. Junior infielder Jadyn Costello hit a three-run home run as part of her 3-for-5 afternoon.

Saint Rose scored seven runs in its final three at bats in the opener. The visitors took a quick lead, scoring an unearned run in their first at bat. The Yellow Jackets (3-8/0-2 NE10) then rallied for a pair of runs in the second. Saint Rose tied the game in the third when senior infielder Carly Wood doubled in Nicoletti.

The Golden Knights took a 3-2 lead when Nicoletti scored on a two-out single by sophomore outfielder #Astasia Myler# in the fifth. Costello blasted a pinch-hit three-run home run in  the sixth for Saint Rose.

After AIC scored a run in its half of the sixth, Saint Rose added three insurance runs in the seventh. Junior catcher Sydney Cimini and senior infielder Kayla Bancroft both had RBI singles.

Nicoletti (2-6) went the distance, scattering five hits and striking out four. Senior right-hander Alyssa Camargo took the loss (1-4).

In the second game, Saint Rose again scored in its first at bat. Nicoletti led off with a single, stole second and would eventually score on a double play ball hit by Wood. The Golden Knights batted around in their five-run fourth. Nicoletti drove in two with a single and sophomore outfielder Briana Bowen doubled home junior outfielder Katie Shevlin to highlight the frame. Nicoletti singled home sophomore catcher Victoria Hallett to give Saint Rose a 7-0 lead in the fifth.

Junior infielder Taylor Solomon drove in Myler with two outs in the sixth to close the Golden Knights' scoring.

The Yellow Jackets scored four runs off sophomore right-hander Roma Mazzariello in the sixth to make things interesting. Only one of the runs was earned.

Mazzariello allowed five runs, two earned over 6.0-plus innings to earn the victory (2-4). Nicoletti earned her second save of the spring. Senior right-hander Jillian Bedard took the loss (1-2) for American International.

Next on the schedule for Saint Rose is Saturday's 12:00 pm conference doubleheader at Pace. Meanwhile, American International hosts a 2:30 pm non-conference twin-bill versus Bridgeport tomorrow.
