DEFENSE PROPELS GOLDEN KNIGHTS PAST FRANKLIN PIERCE IN NE10 QUARTERFINALS

Saint Rose advances to visit Southern New Hampshire Wednesday

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose forced visiting Franklin Pierce into 17 turnovers that the Golden Knights turned into 29 points on the way to today's 93-80 Northeast-10 Conference Championship quarterfinal victory. Saint Rose (24-6) will now visit defending league champion Southern New Hampshire in Wednesday's semifinal. The Penmen came back from a second half, 14 point deficit to upend Adelphi 97-95 this afternoon in Manchester.

"This was an exciting ballgame. We were able to make them pay for their mishaps," said head coach Brian Beaury. "I really feel good that we were able to outlast a very good Franklin Pierce ball club."

Both teams shot well as the Ravens (15-13), who came into the game having won five of their last six, canned 54.0 percent (27-for-50) of their attempts while the Golden Knights buried 58.2 percent (32-for-55) of their opportunities. Franklin Pierce also outrebounded Saint Rose 32-21, but Saint Rose turned the ball over a mere four times.

Junior forward Julian Lipinski scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down five rebounds, while junior guard Mical-Ryan Boyd finished with 20 points behind 8-for-12 shooting from the field. Also, senior forward Chris Dorgler had his usual all-around effort with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

It was close throughout the opening 20 minutes before the Golden Knights took a three point, 44-41, lead into the locker room at halftime.

They then took control behind a 26-5 run three minutes into the second stanza that transformed a 49-46 lead into a 24 point, 75-51, cushion with 8:28 to play. Dorgler knocked down a jumper to spark the jaunt and then buried a trey to cap it.

However, the Ravens did not go away quietly as senior guard Matt Banton finished a fast break, senior swing Marvilio Berroa hit a pair from the line, and junior forward Jordan Lackey drained a 3-pointer to make it a 12 point, 85-73, ballgame with 2:29 to go. Saint Rose then held the Ravens to a pair of field goals the rest of the way to secure its sixth straight win.

Junior forward Mike McDevitt finished with 19 points and Banton had 18 to pace Franklin Pierce.
