NEW HAVEN-Senior forward
Tyler Sayre hit a game-winning shot in the waning seconds for the second time in a week to lift The College of Saint Rose to today's 72-70 triumph at
Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State.
Â
Seven days after draining a 3-pointer in the final three seconds to drive the Golden Knights (21-6/13-5 NE10) to a 71-68 victory at New Haven, Sayre came up clutch again by burying a jumper from the foul line with 1.7 seconds to go to propel the Golden Knights to a key league win heading into the final week of the season.
In the process, Saint Rose avenged an early December two-point loss to the Owls (16-9/12-5 NE10) in Albany. The two clubs are now tied for second place in the loss column, one game behind Southwest Division leader Le Moyne.
Â
"There is a power in belief. Our guys continue to believe in themselves, each other, and what we're doing. I'm very proud of how we stayed the course against a very talented Southern Connecticut State basketball team," said head coach
Brian Beaury." We knew it was going to be a battle and we battled all day."
Â
Junior forward
Julian Lipinski led four Saint Rose double-figures scorers with 19 points. He also pulled down nine rebounds and came up with a pair of blocks. Senior forward
Chris Dorgler scored 10 of his 14 points after halftime, while Sayre and junior guard
Mical-Ryan Boyd finished with 12 and 11 points respectively. Dorgler also handed out seven assists, with only one turnover.
Â
The Golden Knights went in the locker room up six, 39-33, at the break, but the Owls bridged the two halves with 14 unanswered points to transform a 12 point, 39-27, deficit into a two point, 41-39, lead with 17:25 remaining in the ballgame. The rest of the half featured three more lead changes and a pair of ties.
Â
The final deadlock came after Southern Connecticut State scored five consecutive points within a 36 second span that erased a 70-65 deficit. Junior forward Jerry Luckett, Jr. hit the first of two from the line, but sophomore guard Joey Wallace corralled the second miss and was fouled himself. He subsequently hit both of his chances at the stripe to make it 70-68 Golden Knights.
Â
Saint Rose came up empty at the other end and Southern senior guard Michael Mallory was fouled while shooting. He calmly sank both of his free throws around a Golden Knights timeout to tie it, 70-70, with 26 seconds left.
Â
Saint Rose then advanced the ball against some pressure and meticulously ran its offensive set. Sayre eventually wound up with the ball and drained a contested jumper with the shot clock winding down. The Owls' desperation heave at the buzzer fell short as the Golden Knights won their third straight.
Â
Mallory and sophomore guard Isaiah McLeod had 20 and 19 points respectively to lead Southern Connecticut State, while Luckett, Jr. finished with 12 points and seven boards.
Â
Looking ahead, both teams are back on the floor Wednesday with 7:30 pm contests. The Golden Knights host Pace University, while the Owls visit crosstown league rival New Haven.
