WEST HAVEN, Conn. –The College of Saint Rose shot a season-high 51.9 percent (28-for-54) from the floor and outscored host New Haven 10-4 during the opening 4:30 of overtime to chalk up a 65-63
Northeast-10 Conference victory this afternoon.
Â
Junior forward
Karissa Birthwright laid in a feed from sophomore guard
Cameron Graupman to give Saint Rose a two-point lead, 55-53, with 57 seconds to go. However, New Haven junior center Katia Oge knocked down a jumper at the other end to force the extra session.
Â
Birthwright later sandwiched a pair of layups around a Chargers (2-4/1-3 NE10) turnover to put the Golden Knights (4-3/2-3 NE10) up four, 61-57, midway through overtime. Junior guard
Ashley Vanderwall then knocked down a jumper with 27 seconds left that made it a six point, 65-59, affair and pretty much removed all doubt about the eventual outcome.
Â
"This was a great team win for our program today with plenty of contributions. We brought energy throughout the game and when we faltered a bit down the stretch, we were able to regroup, make big stops and get crucial rebounds. I am proud of the effort," said head coach
Karen Haag.
Â
Vanderwall led Saint Rose with 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor, while Birthwright finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. Junior guard
Isa Vara de Rey totaled 10 points and six boards, while junior forward
Zoe McDonald corralled a career-high 10 boards to go along with nine points.
Â
New Haven freshman guard Brie Pergola led all players with 19 points, while junior guard Alexandria Kerr added 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Sophomore forward Micah Wormack contributed 12 points and nine boards.
Â
Looking ahead, both teams have NE10 games next week. Saint Rose hosts Adelphi on Wednesday at 5:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Chargers travel to Pleasantville Tuesday to take on Pace University at 5:30 pm.
