NEW HAVEN, Conn-Five players scored in double figures as The College of Saint Rose defeated Southern Connecticut State 77-63 in its
Northeast-10 Conference opener tonight.

Junior guard
Shane Herrity led Saint Rose (3-0/1-0 NE10) with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Herrity, who knocked down 6-of-9 shots from 3-point range, dished out four assists and grabbed five rebounds.Senior forward

The Owls (0-1/0-1 NE10) also put five players in double digits with freshman guard Ulyen Coleman's 13 points leading the way.
"It's always an easy game when the ball goes in the basket," said assistant coach
Mike Perno. "The 14 threes we made were the difference."
The Golden Knights were hot from beyond the arc early, knocking down 9-of-13 to open up a 13-point lead with five minutes remaining in the opening half. Southern Connecticut State tightened up defensively, closing the period on a 9-0 run to trail 39-35 at the break. The Owls crashed the offensive boards, securing eight first-half offensive rebounds that yielded eight second-chance points. For the half, Saint Rose shot 48.4 percent from the field, including 9-of-18 from three-point range.

After the hosts tallied the first four second half points to tie it at 39, the Golden Knights went on a 15-7 jaunt to open a 54-47 advantage with 12:32 remaining. The Owls cut the lead to four with 6:41 remaining, but senior forward
Jack Jones knocked down a Herrity feed from beyond the arc to give Saint Rose breathing room again.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights will face host Dominican at the Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament on Friday at 8:00 pm. On Saturday afternoon, Southern Connecticut State plays at Le Moyne in Syracuse.
"Dominican is a really good team," said Perno. "They picked up two wins against NE10 teams (Stonehill and Assumption) last weekend. We're looking forward to the challenge of playing a pair of games in two days."
