ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose struck in the opening three minutes and then held off a persistent Concordia attack to upend the Clippers 2-0 in non-league action today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Â
Sophomore forward
Ryan Rooney accounted for both goals and senior keeper
Christian Esposito recorded six saves en route to his second career clean sheet to lead the Golden Knights (1-1). Rooney also nearly completed the hat trick, but his shot rattled off the left goal post in the final minute.
"I was very pleased with the effort the boys put out on the field today. Concordia is a very good team with some really dangerous attacking players. A lot of our guys had to be very disciplined and resourceful on both sides of the ball. I was truly happy for them to get a well-earned result," said head coach
John Ciano.
Â
The Clippers (0-1) manufactured an 18-11 shot advantage and a 7-4 corner kick differential, and were afforded 19 set pieces throughout the afternoon. However, they were forced to play down in the last 16 minutes after sophomore keeper Jaime Gonzalez was issued a red card for tripping Rooney after the former came well off his line in an attempt thwart an undefended breakaway.
Â
The Golden Knights struck early to put Concordia in a pressure situation. Saint Rose got on the board with a mere 2:45 elapsed when senior midfielder
Joshua Hanif delivered a well-placed cross from the right flank that Rooney got in the air to head home.
Â
The Clippers then dictated the pace for much of the remaining afternoon, but Saint Rose held tough before Rooney drove home a penalty kick in the 84th to afford the Golden Knights some much needed breathing room.
Â
Looking ahead, Saint Rose is off until next Saturday when it hosts Roberts Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 5:00 pm following the women's 2:00 pm clash versus Southern New Hampshire. Meanwhile, the Clippers have a 4:00 pm meeting at Queens College this Thursday.
