ALBANY-Stonehill tallied the game-winner with 43 seconds remaining in regulation to upend The College of Saint Rose 2-1 in the
Northeast-10 Conference opener for both clubs at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex this evening.
Â
The Golden Knights (2-2/0-1 NE-10) scored in the initial minute, but the Skyhawks (3-1/1-0 NE-10) squared the game midway through the first period to set the stage for the heartbreaking conclusion.
Â
Sophomore forward
Ryan Rooney extended his season-long goal scoring streak to four matches with his league leading fifth strike of the year. Rooney drove home a rebound from a shot that was initially delivered by junior midfielder
Suleiman Haruna-iya.
Â
However, junior forward James O'Shea one-timed a cross off the foot of fellow junior forward Adam Branco with 28:16 elapsed. Sophomore back Patrick Doherty then provided the game-winner by getting his head on a cross off the left flank that was delivered by junior midfielder Connor O'Brien.
Â
Senior keeper
Christian Esposito came up with nine saves, one shy of his career-high, for Saint Rose; while junior Conor McDonough set aside four shots on target for Stonehill.
Â
Looking ahead, both squads are back on the pitch this Saturday. The Golden Knights travel to fourth-ranked and four-time defending NE-10 champion Southern New Hampshire for a 7:00 pm meeting while the Skyhawks host league rival Franklin Pierce at 11:00 am.
