LATE TALLY SPOILS GOLDEN KNIGHTS 2016 OPENER AT MERCY

DOBBS FERRY, NY-The College of Saint Rose fell 2-1 at Mercy on Thursday evening after an 86th minute strike put the host Mavericks on top to seal the 2016 opener for both teams.

Mercy struck first in the 24th minute on a cross from a free kick before Saint Rose sophomore forward Ryan Rooney tied the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute by capitalizing on a loose ball in the box. The Golden Knights made a late charge that included a shot by junior back Ryan Clarke, but were unable to net the equalizer.

Senior goalkeeper Christian Esposito made seven stops, while the Mavericks held a 24-9 shot advantage and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Junior midfielder Suleiman Harunya-iya recorded a team-high three shots on goal.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose is scheduled to play its home opener Sunday with a 1:00 pm match versus Concordia at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Meanwhile, the Mavericks have 12:00 pm non-league home date Saturday with Le Moyne.
