SAINT ROSE LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT IN NE-10 CHAMPIONSHIP SETBACK TO #4 SNHU

RINDGE, NH–The College of Saint Rose scored four times in the ninth inning only to fall just short 9-7 versus fourth-ranked Southern New Hampshire in today's Northeast-10 Conference Championship Weekend opener on the campus of Franklin Pierce University.

The Golden Knights (19-19) will now face either Pace University (29-20) or host and the top-ranked Ravens (45-4) in an elimination game tonight at 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Penmen move on to play the other squad in a winner's bracket contest tomorrow at 3:00 pm.

Junior second baseman Mike Flynn finished 2-for-4 and drove in four runs while senior left fielder Nick Venier went 3-for-5 to lead the Saint Rose offense. Meanwhile, senior right-hander Coby Schwartz tossed 3.1 innings of no-hit ball out of the bullpen.

Saint Rose took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second and pushed across another run in the fourth that tied it 3-3. However, Southern New Hampshire (43-5) put up a three-spot in both the fourth and sixth innings to afford itself a lead that proved too large for the Golden Knights to overcome.

Sophomore designated hitter Alec Caprarella tripled to left field that scored junior third baseman Alex Chandler to make it 1-0 Saint Rose in the second. Caprarella then came across on a Flynn ground out. In the fourth, Chandler crossed home via a Flynn base hit to center.

Senior Patrick Griffin got things started in the ninth with a one out, pinch hit single through the left side. Flynn then followed with his first career home run that cleared the left field fence. Two batters later, sophomore first baseman Chris Introcaso drove an RBI double to the left-centerfield gap. Junior shortstop Tyler Ungerland then added a run scoring single up the middle before the Penmen were finally able to retire the Golden Knights after they had sent nine batters to the plate.

For the Penmen, senior second baseman Mike Mastroberti finished 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in the third and a three-run homer in the fourth. Sophomore right-hander Justin Valdespina allowed three runs and fanned eight, while walking only one, over 8.0 innings of work to run his record to 9-3 this spring.
